Mastering Your Message: The Importance of Strategic Positioning for Podguesting

June 12, 20264 min read

You might have the best Signature Angle and a clear Outcome, but if your positioning is off, your message won’t resonate with the audience that matters most. It’s essential to connect with the right listeners to see a desirable return on investment (ROI). Podguesting—appearing on podcasts as a guest—offers a fantastic opportunity to showcase your expertise, but only if you pitch yourself to the right shows, where the audience truly needs what you offer.

Understanding Positioning

Positioning isn’t just about getting your name out there; it’s about being the only expert that specific podcast hosts want on their show. The goal is to connect directly with the people who need your insights and solutions. To make this connection, you must be crystal clear on who your ideal audience is and what they are looking for.

Who Is Your Ideal Listener?

In the world of podguesting, your “Ideal Client” corresponds to your “Ideal Listener.” This listener possesses the specific challenges that you solve and is already on the lookout for answers through podcasts. Here’s what your ideal listener might look like:

- Has the specific problem you solve: For example, if you coach entrepreneurs, your ideal listener might struggle with scaling their business or managing their time effectively.
- Is already listening to podcasts to find a solution: This person is actively engaged and searching for help.
- Values the unique way you deliver results: Your distinctive approach to coaching or consulting must resonate with them.
- Is ready to take action NOW: They are motivated to engage with you and follow your calls to action.

Remember, your target is not “anyone with a pair of headphones.” The more niche you can be in defining your audience, the easier it becomes to find the 15 aligned shows that they already trust.

Defining Your Aligned Audience

To effectively position yourself as the “Must-Have Guest,” you’ll need to unpack three layers of your ideal listener:

1. The Basics (Demographics):
- Who are they?
- What is their industry?
- Are they side-hustlers or corporate executives?

2. The Deeper Stuff (Psychographics):
- What keeps them up at night?
- What are their biggest fears?
- What are they striving to achieve? For instance, they might fear never escaping their 9-to-5 grind.

3. Their Current vs. Desired Situation:
- Where are they currently in their journey?
- What solutions have they previously attempted that didn’t work?
- Where do they envision themselves in 6 months?

Why Specificity Creates “The Yes”

When you try to communicate to “everyone,” your pitch dilutes into generic noise.

Generic Pitch Example: “I help people grow their businesses.”

This pitch could resonate with anyone from a teenager running a lemonade stand to a Fortune 500 CEO.

Positioned Pitch Example:

“I help women coaches who are stuck at $3K months break through to consistent $10K months without working more hours.”

With clarity in your positioning, the host of a podcast specifically tailored for coaches will see value in your message and think, “That’s exactly who my audience needs!”

Don’t Fear Niche-ing Down

You may hesitate to narrow your focus, worried it will limit your opportunities. Ironically, the opposite is often true. “Riches are in the niches” applies to podcasting, too. By becoming the go-to expert for a specific audience, you not only elevate your services but also establish a reputation that attracts referrals from podcast hosts.

Your Action Steps

Ready to enhance your positioning? Follow these three steps:

1. Define Your Ideal Listener:

- Demographics: What’s their job title or life stage?
- Psychographics: What is their #1 fear regarding their business or life?
- Current Situation: Identify what isn’t working for them right now.

2. Use Their Language:
- What specific phrases or words does your ideal listener use to articulate their struggles? Are they expressing feelings of being “overwhelmed,” or do they say, “I’m drowning in admin”?

3. Craft Your Positioning Statement:

- Use the formula: “I help [SPECIFIC LISTENER] who [CURRENT STRUGGLE] achieve [DESIRED RESULT].”

Once you’ve nailed your positioning, you’ll transition from shouting into the void to speaking directly to the person who is eagerly waiting to hire you. Your journey as an author, entrepreneur, or coach will gain momentum, leading to greater visibility and impact.

By taking the time to clearly define your ideal listener and tailor your message specifically to their needs, you unlock the potential for greater engagement and conversion.
