WHY YOUR VOICE MATTERS

You already have the expertise

The challenge is making sure people understand it

Many talented experts remain overlooked—not because they lack experience, but because their message is unclear, inconsistent, or difficult to remember.

I help you clarify what you want to be known for, communicate it with confidence, and put your voice in the right conversations so the people who need your expertise can recognize its value.

You don't need more noise. You need a message people remember

Elevate your Influence

May 29, 20264 min read

Venturing into the world of podcast guesting, you might wonder why certain pitches result in instant bookings while others seem to vanish into thin air. The secret often boils down to one crucial element: your messaging. In the competitive realm of podguesting, how you communicate can make the difference between landing a high-impact interview and being overlooked.

The Reality of Podguesting in 2026

Contrary to popular belief, podguesting is no longer merely about sending generic emails. In 2026, the best opportunities lie in your direct messages (DMs). A DM is an open door to a global stage — or a missed opportunity if handled poorly. Unfortunately, many aspiring guests treat podcast hosts like untouchable celebrities, sending one-size-fits-all messages and giving up after receiving no response. Or worse, they bombard hosts with long-winded pitches, leaving them ignored and frustrated.

Here’s the truth: A DM is not a pitch; it’s a conversation. Your immediate goal isn’t to secure an invitation but to create a genuine connection that may lead to an invitation down the line.

What Makes a Great Podguesting Opener?

Your DM opener is crucial for laying the groundwork for meaningful exchanges. The best openers accomplish three key objectives:

1. Gets a Response: It’s low-pressure and easy to answer.
2. Builds Authority: It indicates you’ve done your homework about their show.
3. Opens the Door: It shifts the dynamic from “fan” to “expert collaborator.”

Bad Openers to Avoid

- “Hey, I’d love to be on your show. How do I apply?”
- “Can I ask you a quick question about your podcast?”
- “I saw your profile, and I think I'd be a perfect guest.”

5 DM Openers That Actually Work

1. The “Deep-Dive” Compliment Script:
“Hey [Host Name], just finished the episode with [Previous Guest]. That point you made about [Specific Topic] completely shifted my perspective. Are you planning on doing a part two to that conversation soon?”

Why it works: It shows you’re attentive and engaged with their content.

2. The Story-Reply Flip Script:
“YES to your story about [Topic]! I recently helped a client tackle a similar issue by [Small Insight]. Curious, do you encounter that often with your audience?”

Why it works: It presents you as an expert while focusing on a mutual interest.

3. The “Listener-First” Follow-Up Script:
“Hey [Name], I’ve been a long-time listener. I noticed you haven’t covered [Specific Niche Topic] in a while—are you looking to explore that this season?”

Why it works: You’re providing valuable insights to help them serve their audience better.

4. The Mutual Connection Ping Script:
“Hey! [Mutual Contact] mentioned your recent series on [Topic]. They said our methodologies for [Your Expertise] align closely. What exciting things are you working on right now?”

Why it works: It utilizes social proof, which can elevate your credibility.

5. The Soft Permission Ask Script:
“Hey [Name], I have a 3-step framework for [Specific Result] that I think your audience would find beneficial. Mind if I send over a quick 30-second outline to see if it fits your next season?”

Why it works: You show respect for their time and expertise, inviting them to engage on their terms.

The DM Workflow

When crafting your DMs, choose your opener based on context. Did they share a recent story? Use the Story-Reply. Is it a dream show you’ve coveted for a while? Lean on the Deep-Dive Compliment. Once you send the message, wait patiently for a response. Don’t follow up immediately; give them time to reply.

If they’re not booking at the moment, offer insight without pitching, and back out gracefully. If they express interest, then you can introduce your Signature Pitch.

The Bottom Line

Remember, your job in the DMs is to guide the conversation toward a “Yes,” not to force it. Approach hosts as fellow professionals rather than untouchable authorities, and they’ll start to recognize you as an expert.

Ready to put your newfound DM skills to the test? I invite you to message me with the word “MUSINGS” to apply as a guest on my podcast, Munira’s Musings. I’m eager to see how you leverage this framework to transform casual conversations into booked appearances. By refining your approach, you can elevate your influence and become a sought-after guest in the podcasting landscape.

As you refine your approach to podguesting, remember that creating authentic connections is essential for success.

With over 25 years in consulting and experience training professionals at various levels, I've seen firsthand how meaningful conversations can lead to valuable opportunities. Through my podcast, "Munira's Musings," where I’ve engaged with numerous industry leaders, I've learned that the key to effective communication lies in clarity and relevance tailored to the audience's needs.

By applying these principles and approaching your outreach with genuine intent, you can transform your messaging and establish yourself as a sought-after guest who resonates with both hosts and listeners alike.
