As an aspiring author, entrepreneur, or coach, you're likely eager to share your expertise through podcasts. However, many potential guests miss the mark before their pitch is even fully read. The secret? It's all about shifting your focus from what you offer to what the listener gains.
Here's where many podguests falter: they emphasize features rather than outcomes.
When crafting your pitch, avoid statements like, “I can talk for 45 minutes,” or “I have a professional mic.” These details, while impressive, do not sell your value to the host. They are merely features, not the compelling outcomes that captivate an audience.
Podcast hosts prioritize transformations. They are looking for guests who can provide insights, solutions, and “lightbulb moments” that make an impact. Your job is to articulate the benefits your appearance brings to your audience.
Let's clarify the distinction between features and outcomes.
- Features detail the logistics of your appearance: your bio, your equipment, your methods.
- Outcomes reflect what the listener achieves, learns, or experiences after listening to your episode.
For example, instead of stating, “I'll share my 6-step marketing framework,” reframe it as,
“Your listeners will leave with a one-page plan to land their next high-ticket client by Friday.”
This shift in focus illustrates the direct value you'll deliver.
Hosts are motivated by the value they provide to their audiences. They think in terms of problems needing solutions. When reaching out to them, your first step should be to highlight the outcome. Support this statement with the expertise that backs it up.
To refine your pitch, use this transformation formula:
“In this episode, your audience will go from [CURRENT STRUGGLE] to [DESIRED RESULT] so they can [BIGGER IMPACT].”
Here are examples:
- “Your listeners will go from dreading sales calls to confidently closing $5k deals so they can finally build the business they’ve been dreaming about.”
- “They will transition from feeling invisible on LinkedIn to becoming the go-to authority in their niche, allowing them to stop chasing leads and start attracting them.”
Next, it's crucial to convey your expertise in the right context. Features aren’t the spotlight—they are supporting elements. Begin with the outcome, followed by your qualifications. For instance, say, “I’ll teach your audience how to automate their lead generation using my proven ‘Invisible Funnel’ system that I’ve spent 10 years refining.”
Now, to take action and refine your pitch further, follow these steps:
Step 1: Identify the Transformation
Consider the following:
- What struggles does the listener face before they tune in?
- What transformative results do they obtain after listening?
- How do they feel post-interview? (Confident, relieved, empowered?)
Step 2: Write Your Top 3 Episode Outcomes
Utilize this formula for clarity:
“Your listeners will go from [STRUGGLE] to [RESULT] so they can [IMPACT].”
Step 3: Connect Your Features to Those Outcomes
Identify an aspect of your background, such as a unique framework or relevant experience, and clarify how it facilitates the desired results for the audience.
Finally, remember this key takeaway: People don’t tune in to your podcast to delve into your bio—they tune in for their own breakthroughs. When hosts recognize the transformation you provide, your chances of securing an invitation increase exponentially.
Now, I challenge you to put this knowledge into action.
When you create pitches that focus on outcomes, you position yourself as a valuable asset to podcast hosts.
Take the next step. Craft your pitch to highlight the breakthroughs you'll deliver.
Looking forward to seeing you behind the mic!
